Palantir

Pippin lay in silence for a long time. The thought of the ball haunted him. It was as if he felt its weight in his hands, saw a mysterious red fire in the depths, and tried in vain to force himself to think about something else. Finally, unable to fight with himself anymore, he quietly got up and looked around. It was cold. The moon was shining brightly, and the shadows were as black as coal. Everyone was asleep; there were no lookouts in sight: either they had gone to the other side of the hill, or they were hiding among the bushes. Pippin cautiously approached the sleeping Gandalf and took a closer look. The magician lay still, but Pippin caught the gleam of his eyes from under his loosely closed eyelashes and hurriedly retreated. Gandalf did not move, and the hobbit slowly, as if against his will, crept up to him again. The magician was lying on his side, covered with a cloak, and hugging something round wrapped in a black cloth with one hand. The other hand seemed to have just slipped off this bundle.

Barely breathing, Pippin crept even closer, then, kneeling down, reached out, touched the bundle and picked it up. The bundle was not as heavy as he had expected. "It's probably something else," he thought with a strange sense of relief, but he didn't put the package back. Looking around, he noticed a round boulder nearby, and with difficulty reached out and picked it up.

Quickly and carefully, he pulled off the dark cloth from the bundle, wrapped the cobblestone in it and laid it next to the sleeping man. Now, at last, he could look at his prey. There it was, this ball, dull and smooth, lying in his lap. Pippin hurriedly wrapped him in a cloak and was about to return to his place, but then Gandalf stirred in his sleep, muttered something, felt the stone next to him and, sighing, calmed down again.

Placing the ball on his lap, the hobbit bent over it, like a child over a delicacy taken to its corner. Then he carefully opened the hem of his cloak and looked at it. At first, the ball was pitch black, with only glints of moonlight gliding across its surface. Then something lit up inside and began to move.
