The Ashen Warrior, Not Burning

Ashen One is the protagonist of the game Dark Souls III.

Non-igniters are restless souls whose body was rejected by the flame and turned to ashes when its owner tried to prolong the cycle of Ignition with the help of his soul. Since then, they are doomed to always hunt for those in whose chest the flame burns - the Lords of ashes, as this is their duty and eternal thirst: at least for a while to master those smoldering embers that burn in the body of the champion.

The awakening of the non-burning ones is associated with the cycles of Igniting the first Flame - when the Fire is ready to go out and the Lords leave their thrones, the Non-Burning Ones rise up, designed to defeat them and return the ashes of the Lords to the Temple of Fire, where they will once again fulfill their duty. Our hero is one of these pursuers. Upon waking up, the Non-Scorcher goes to the Temple of Fire, where he is introduced to the situation and guided by the Guardian, as well as one of the Lords of the Ashes, Ludlet of Courland, on whose instructions the Non-Scorcher goes to Lothric. After defeating many soldiers who have turned into hollow ones, the hero finds a church cathedral, where he meets Emma, the High Priestess. She says that the Lords of the Ashes are no longer in Lothric, they have all left it and gone to their ruined houses and monasteries scattered at the foot of the city, so first the Non-Burning One will have to go on a journey and find them. Upon learning this, the champion of ashes defeats the monster guarding the main gate and reaches the next point in his journey - the Undead settlement.

During his travels, the hero meets Yoel, a pilgrim from London, who makes him doubt whether it is worth sacrificing himself to ignite a flame if it can be controlled. These doubts grow as he continues to follow his path and only become stronger when, once again returning to the Temple of Fire, the Non-Scorcher meets Yuri, one of the Founders of the Black Church of Londor, who replaced the deceased Yoel. She tells the Champion of the ashes that he has been chosen to become the new Dark Lord, who has the strength to usurp the flames and lead the undead. With this statement, Yuri puts Negor in front of a choice - to follow his duty or betray those who rely on him, but these are not the only ways he can choose.

Having already returned most of the Lords to their thrones, the hero finds himself in a mysterious place resembling a Temple of Fire, but with one major difference - this version of him was plunged into pitch darkness and the flames in it had already died out. It was there that the Champion found the eyes of the Guardian, who saw a world without Fire and betrayed him. Returning to the light version of the Temple, the Non-Burning One gave these eyes to his Guardian, who accepted them with a bit of confusion and did not know what to do - follow the will of her Non-Burning One or protect the flame.

Full of doubts about what to do - ignite the flame, extinguish it or usurp it, the Champion fulfilled his duty by returning the last Lord to his throne and going into the Furnace of the First Flame - a distorted version of Lothric, in which, possessing a powerful enough soul, he could decide the fate of this world. Climbing a huge tree, the Non-Scorcher defeated the last defender of the flame - the Soul of ashes, the embodiment of all previous Lords of Ashes, after defeating which he faced a difficult choice.

Possible interchanges:

- Fulfilling his duty - resisting all other temptations, the Champion of the Ashes used his soul to ignite the Flame and prolong the cycle, thus becoming the new Lord of the Ashes.

- Flame Usurpation - by siding with Londor, the hero, who had gone through a special ritual at that time, absorbed and subdued the flame, thereby becoming the Dark Lord and lord of the Undead.

- The Coming of Darkness - desiring to see a world without Fire, the Unlit One allowed the Guardian to extinguish the First Flame, leaving only pitiful coals and plunging the world into darkness.

- Madness - non-smokers always hunt for flames, and our hero is no exception. After allowing the Guardian to extinguish the flame, he kills her and takes the remnants of it for himself, becoming the last source of flame.
Appearance

In the trailers and concept art, the Non-Scorcher is dressed in a set of Fire, as well as armed with a long steel sword and a shield with an eagle. The initial outfit depends on the choice of class in the editor, as well as the appearance of the Non-burning one.

Like the Cursed and Chosen Undead, he is a silent character and has no spoken lines or dialogues, only screams when injured or dying.
