Sekhmet



Sekhmet, Sahmet, Sokhmet ("mighty") — the patron goddess of Memphis, the wife of Ptah; the goddess of war and the scorching sun, the terrible eye of the Sun god Ra, a healer who possessed the magical power to cause diseases and cure them, patronized doctors who were considered her priests. She was guarding the Pharaoh. She had a temper beyond control.

She was depicted with a lion's head, which caused her to be identified with Buttermilk, Meatballs and Bast. She was the personification of the heat of the sun and the destructive energy of the Sun, and therefore a disk was depicted on her head. As the goddess of heat, Sekhmet appeared to be very harsh. In the late myth of the destruction of rebellious humanity by the god Ra, Sekhmet (in other versions of the myth — Hathor, Tefnut, Bast) as the eye of Ra enjoyed beating people, and only the red wine spilled on the earth by the gods, which Sekhmet attacked, mistaking for blood, and from which she became intoxicated, forced her to stop the massacre.

Sekhmet was considered a slayer of the enemies of the gods. During the Middle Kingdom, the pharaohs were often compared to Sekhmet as defenders of Egypt from enemies; therefore, the goddess was sometimes depicted with burning arrows. Some versions of the myth of the creation of mankind call her the creator of Libyans and Asians. She wore the epithet "mighty" or "mighty". She was named "The Great One" and "Lady of the Desert."

She was the guardian of peace and the protector of people. They turned to her in times of danger. It was believed that her anger brought pestilence and epidemics, and when the plague broke out in Egypt, Pharaoh Amenhotep III ordered the production of seven hundred statues of the goddess to appease the angry gods. The goddess was worshipped in the temple of Heliopolis, where the priests kept sacred lions. Temples were also erected on the edge of the desert, where wild lions roamed.
