Voldemort

"Did I know that I was facing the most dangerous Dark Magician of all time? No, I had no idea what would grow out of him."
Albus Dumbledore

Tom Marvolo Riddle is the main antagonist in the Harry Potter series of novels; a dark wizard with great magical powers who has almost achieved immortality with the help of black magic, or rather, with the help of Horcruxes. In the wizarding world, he is better known as Lord Voldemort.
They are afraid of him to such an extent that even his name, as a rule, is not pronounced. Most of the characters call him "You-Know-Who" or "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named," and his followers, the Death Eaters, call him "The Dark Lord" and address him as "The Lord."

"I looked at him more closely: Tom wasn't joking. It was hard to tell from him when he was messing around and when he was serious, but he wasn't trying to play me right now.

"And what is it?" I asked cautiously.

"I read about horcruxes in a book,— he said. — There was only a mention, but I got the gist: a certain object is taken, then the wizard separates a part of his soul and places it in this object. We need some kind of ritual, but yes, I'll find a description.… The main thing is that if a wizard dies, he can be reborn with the help of a horcrux. In fact, this is immortality.

—It's actually death," I said after a moment's thought.

"What are you talking about?" Tom frowned.

"As Grandma Marta says, someone brings good to the world, someone brings destruction, and I'm just carrying a basket of groceries," I muttered. "Tom, this isn't going to do any good. You said you need to separate a part of the soul, right? Which part? How do you determine? Will there be an equal amount of everything in it, or, for example, will I not be there? I'm at least taking up some space there, aren't I?

—Um...— he said.

— And if, on the contrary, you separate the part where I am, what will remain here? It's not going to be you anymore," I felt like I was on the right path. "Or not really you." You're going to lose something, even if you don't feel it right away. Maybe it's some little thing that seems unnecessary, but remember your childhood: sometimes you lose some nonsense, even if it's colored chalk, and you just can't forget it. I paused and added, "I lost my hairpin so badly, I still remember." It was stupid, it always came undone, but my grandfather gave it to me... and I either forgot it somewhere, or it fell off, but I didn't notice.… I don't want to explain it, but Tom, don't do that. If you do that, and I'm sure you will, I'll lose you. And you'll lose yourself.

Tom stared out the window in silence.

"But life is too short,— he said. — I won't have time to do everything I want to do.

"Find another way,— I said. — It's important for you that the body lives, so take care of it. But don't touch the soul."
