Vedjat

Ouadget (Ujjat, Vedjat, also the eye of Horus or the eye of Horus) is an ancient Egyptian symbol, the left hawk—eye of the god Horus, which was knocked out in his fight with Set. Horus' right eye symbolized the Sun, and his left eye — the moon, its damage was explained by the phases of the moon. This eye, healed by the god Thoth, became a powerful amulet worn by the pharaohs. He represented various aspects of the divine world order, from royalty to fertility.

The surviving ancient Egyptian texts have brought to us various versions of the myth of the eye of Horus. According to one of them, Seth pierced the eye of Horus with his finger, according to another — stepped on it, according to the third — swallowed it. One of the texts says that Hathor restored the eye by giving it milk from gazelles. In another, it is reported that Anubis buried the eye on the mountainside, where it sprouted in the form of a vine.

Horus used the reborn eye to resurrect his father Osiris. After Osiris swallowed the eye of Horus, his dismembered body fused together just as it happened with the eye itself. In order to help with the resurrection, Wadget's images were applied to Egyptian mummies at the hole through which the insides were removed from them. Monthly ceremonies of the "restoration" of ouajet related to the lunar cycle were held in the temples of Egypt.
