The leader of the ninja turtles team. He was named Splinter in honor of the Renaissance artist, like his brothers. He wants to be a good leader, but his brothers often don't listen to him.

Leonardo and his brothers were once ordinary turtles: when they were babies, they were picked up from the pet store by Hamato Yoshi. Their future sensei and father passed by a strange man, Krang, he sensed something strange about him and followed him. Unfortunately, Yoshi was caught off guard when he accidentally stepped on the tail of a brown rat. Krang found him and tried to kill him, but Yoshi resisted. Eventually, Krang dropped the canister of Mutagen they were holding, causing the turtles and Yoshi to mutate. Yoshi transformed into a humanoid brown rat named "Splinter", and Leo and his brothers mutated into humanoid turtles after coming into contact with Splinter when he was human. Splinter knew that they would never be accepted in their urban society, so he brought them to the sewers, built a house there, and made four turtles his children. Knowing the world would be dangerous, and there was a time when they would like to explore the outside world, Splinter taught the boys the art of ninjutsu. Leo and his brothers were named after the great Renaissance artists from the book Splinter, fished out of a rainstorm.
