Airbrushing is one of the fine art techniques that uses an airbrush as a tool for applying liquid or powdered dye using compressed air to a surface. A spray can can also be used.

Due to the widespread use of airbrushing and the appearance of a large number of different paints and formulations, airbrushing has received a new impetus for development. Nowadays, airbrushing is used to create paintings, retouch photographs, taxidermy, modeling, textile painting, wall painting, body art, nail painting, painting souvenirs and toys, painting dishes. It is often used to apply drawings to cars, motorcycles, other equipment, in printing, in design, etc. Thanks to the thin layer of paint and the possibility of smoothly spraying it on the surface, it is possible to achieve excellent decorative effects, such as smooth color transitions, volume, photographic realism of the resulting image, imitation of rough texture with perfect surface smoothness.

The first airbrush drawings were found in the Cave of Hands in Rio Pinturas, Santa Cruz province (Argentina). The drawings were created around 7300 BC. Ancient artists blew pigment-paint onto the wall through a hollow bone. The part of the surface that was not covered by the hand was painted, leaving the image of the artist's hand. Many other drawings of animals and people were made with the same technique, making brush painting more powerful. To complicate the drawings by filling in a larger surface and adding textures, the artists had to spend a lot of time and effort.

The first mechanical airbrush was invented in 1876 by industrialist Francis Edgar Stanley. Jeweler Abner Peeler was engaged in the improvement of the airbrush. In 1879, he used a manual compressor and positioned himself "for watercolor painting and other artistic purposes."
