Aragorn

Aragorn is one of the main characters in the novel "The Lord of the Rings" by J. R. R. Tolkien, the last leader of the rangers and the first king of the Reunited Kingdom, a direct descendant of the northern branch of the royal family of Elendil (through Isildur, its eldest branch — the dynasty of Emlaith of Artedain).

Aragorn means "revered king" in Sindarin.

Aragorn II (named after his ancestor Aragorn I) is the son of Arathorn II and Gilraen, born on March 1, 2931 A.D. Since 2951 A.D. He has been the 16th (and last) leader of the Dunedain. Aragorn II, the 39th direct descendant of Isildur (as well as Anarion, since the last ruling northern king of Arvedui was married to the daughter of the Gondorian king Ondoher), leader of the Dunedain of the North, after the War of the Ring, king of the Reunited kingdom of Gondor and Arnor. Husband of Arwen, daughter of Elrond, father of Eldarion and several daughters.

When Aragorn was two years old, his father was killed in a battle with orcs. Aragorn was raised in Rivendell by Elrond. At his mother's request, his parentage was kept secret, as she feared that he would be killed like his father and grandfather if his true parentage as a descendant of Elendil and heir to Isildur became known. Thus, Aragorn hid under the name Estelle (hope, in Sindarin) and did not know anything about his origin until he came of age in 2951 A.D..

At the age of 20, Aragorn learned his real name and ancestry from his relative and tutor Elrond, who gave Aragorn the Ring of Barahir and the fragments of Narsil. Aragorn refused the Scepter of Annuminas, arguing that "the time has not come." In the same year, Aragorn met and fell in love with Arwen, the 2,700-year-old daughter of Elrond, who had returned from Lorien, her mother's homeland. After talking to her, Aragorn left Rivendell for thirty years and became the 16th leader of the Dunedain (remnants of his people scattered during civil and regional wars centuries earlier), fighting the servants of Sauron.

In the year 2956 A.D., he met Gandalf and became his friend.

In 2957-2980 CE, Aragorn served incognito under the name Thorongil in the army of King Rohan Tengel (father of King Theoden) and Governor of Gondor Ecthelion II (father of Denethor). He sought to counter the growing threat from Sauron and his allies, which boosted morale among the defenders of the West. In battles, he gained invaluable experience, which he later applied in the War of the Ring. In 2980, with a small squadron of Gondorian ships, he marched on the captured Umbar pirates, sank many of their ships and captured their commanders. However, after the victory in Umbar, Thorongil, to the chagrin of his men and governor Ecthelion II, left the army and went East alone towards Mordor.

In the same year, 2980, he visited Lorien and met Arwen there again. With Galadriel's blessing, Aragorn became betrothed to Arwen on the hill of Kerin Amroth, giving her a relic of his house, the ring of Barahir. Arwen agreed with him, renouncing her elven heritage and accepting the Gift of Death. There, during the stay of the Brotherhood of the Ring as a guest of the elves, Aragorn received a new name — Elessar. Elrond, worried that after his daughter's marriage, he would never see her again, set a condition for Aragorn: marriage is possible only if Aragorn becomes king of Arnor and Gondor.

After 3000 A.D., at Gandalf's request, he and his rangers guarded the Shire, the peaceful land of Hobbits. Near its borders, Aragorn becomes known to the surrounding inhabitants by the nickname the Wanderer. Starting in 3001, he assisted Gandalf in his unsuccessful attempt to find Gollum. Finally, in 3017, after searching the whole of Rovanion, he managed to catch Gollum in the Dead Marshes north of Mordor, which helped to find out the history of the Ring. Visiting Rivendell after numerous absences, one day he met Bilbo Baggins, who was attracted to his ability to compose poetry. Later, after learning the story of Aragorn, Bilbo dedicated his poems to him.:

There is no luster in true gold.;
Not every traveler is forgotten;
Not everyone weakens under the yoke of years —
The earth keeps the roots.
The ashes will turn to fire again,
In the twilight, a ray will sparkle,
The blade will return to the hilt,
The king will get the crown.

Before the events described in the novel "The Lord of the Rings", Aragorn also visited the underground kingdom of the dwarves — Moria and was in Harada (where, in his own words, "the stars are different"). Tolkien does not specify when these journeys took place.

In 3018-3019 A.D. Aragorn participated in the War of the Ring. In 3018, he became a member of the Brotherhood of the Ring, and after Gandalf fell into the abyss under the Kazad-Duma Bridge, he led the detachment. He led the party to the Waterfalls of Reros, where he made the unforgivable mistake of allowing Boromir to be alone with Frodo. When Boromir demanded that Frodo either give the ring to him or carry it to Minas Tirith, Frodo put on the Ring and fled. The Fellowship of the Ring broke up. While searching for Frodo, Aragorn missed the moment of the orc attack, Boromir's last stand, and the capture of the Hobbits Peregrine and Meriadoc. After burying Boromir, Aragorn, along with Gimli and Legolas, went to rescue the captured Hobbits. While chasing the orcs, they met Gandalf, who was reborn after the battle with the Balrog.

Aragorn participated in the Battle of Helm's Deep in Rohan and the liberation of the southern lands of Gondor from pirates. After receiving the Isengard palantir from Gandalf, he was the first mortal to look into it for centuries and, resisting Sauron's magical might, gained control of the palantir. He led the army of the Paths of the Dead to the south, clearing it of the Umbarian fleet, gathered the army of the southern provinces and decided the outcome of the battle with Sauron's army in the Pelennor fields with a surprise attack. Then he led a campaign against Mordor, led troops to the Black Gate and led troops in an unequal battle on the Kormallen field.

Since May 1, 3020, Aragorn II Elessar has been King of the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor. At the same time, he married Arwen and lived with her for 120 years.

He died in 120 C.E., and his body rests in Minas Anor (formerly Minas Tirith). After his death, his son Eldarion assumed the throne of the Reunited Kingdom.

Tolkien gives a brief but accurate description of Aragorn in The Fellowship of the Ring: lean, tanned and tall, with black hair streaked with gray, gray eyes in a stern pale face. In The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, in the Appendices to The Lord of the Rings, he pointed out his character, often gloomy and sad, but with unexpected moments of fun. Some time after the book was published, Tolkien wrote that Aragorn was at least 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm) tall.[2][3] An interesting feature of the character's description is Aragorn's trousers, a phrase used as proof of the fact that John Tolkien could not physically describe the entire world he invented. The fact is that the Lord of the Rings text never mentions the fact of Aragorn wearing pants.

Through his upbringing in Rivendell under Elrond's supervision, Aragorn learned elvish wisdom in addition to his inherited Dunedain insight. In addition, he was a descendant of Maya Melian. He was a skilled healer, for example, he knew about the use of acelas (also known as the "royal leaf"). He was also a mighty warrior and an unsurpassed commander; after the battle of the Pelennor Fields, Eomer and Imrahil spoke of him as being able to remain unharmed with him, even in the thick of the battle. As Isildur's heir, Aragorn had great power and could use Orthanc's palantir even against Sauron's will.

But like most ordinary people, Aragorn was not immune to his own fears and doubts.
