Arkenstone


Arkenstone — in the book "The Hobbit", a legendary stone unearthed by dwarves in the depths of Erebor. The greatest value of the treasury of Erebor, also called the "Heart of the Mountain" and the "Sovereign's Stone". It is a faceted round crystal (similar in description to a diamond) about the size of a child's head, emitting an indistinct glow.

The stone was discovered by the dwarves of Erebor during the reign of Thrain I. The dwarves extracted and cut the stone so that the light emitted by the stone became even brighter. After that, the stone became a relic of the dwarves of the Durin People. In 2210, Thorin I left Erebor with all the dwarves and took the stone with him, but in 2590, his descendant Thror returned to the dwarf citadel in the northeast of Middle-earth and installed the Arkenstone on his throne (see illustration). For a long time, this stone represented the greatness of Thror's power, but in 2770, the dragon Smaug attacked Erebor. The Arkenstone was lost.

Tolkien apparently borrowed the name of the stone from the Old English word earcanstan or the Old Norse jarknasteinn, meaning "precious stone"
