Azog the Defiler

Azog is the leader of the orcs of the Misty Mountains, who settled in the dwarf kingdom of Kazad-Duma and called himself its ruler.

Nothing is known about the origin of Azog. He ruled over the orcs (goblins) who settled in the abandoned dwarf kingdom of Khazad-Duma (Moria).

In 2790 A.D., the rightful king, Trora, entered the gates of Moria, near the valley of Azanulbizar. He entered alone and, being captured by the orcs, was beheaded by Azog. The body and heads were thrown out of the gate, after which Thror's companion, Naru, who was waiting outside, was ordered to approach and find out the message. Azog carved his name on Thror's forehead, and Naru said that this was the name of the one who was now king in Moria - let the dwarves know this. Azog mockingly tossed Naru a purse of coins like a beggar and told the dwarf to get out.

The dwarves were enraged and having gathered armies, three years later they started a War with the Orcs (2793 A.D.). The dwarves smashed the fortresses and settlements of the orcs from Gundabad to the Iris fields, looking everywhere for Azog. Finally, in 2799 A.D., the surviving orcs gathered in Moria and the dwarves entered the valley of Azanulbizar. The last of the battles of the war with the orcs took place there - the Battle of Azanulbizar.

Azog did not take part in the battle personally until the dwarves broke through to the very entrance to Moria. Nain II, king of the dwarves of the Iron Hills, challenged Azog to battle and he came out with the words:

- what? Another beggar at my door? Should I brand you, too?

Nain was exhausted from the long battle and in reckless anger, while Azog was cunning and full of strength. Soon, Nine hit with all his might, and Azog jumped back and kicked him in the leg. The dwarf's axe split on a stone, and he lost his balance, then Azog struck him in the neck. Nain's chainmail collar withstood, but the blow was so strong that it broke the dwarf's neck. Azog was about to shout in triumph, but then he saw that his troops were defeated and fleeing south, and all the bodyguards were killed. Azog ran to the gate, but Dain, the son of Nain, caught up with him before entering. He killed Azog and cut off his head. When the dwarves gathered in the valley, they impaled Azog's head on a stake, and put a purse of coins in his mouth, after which they burned the remains of the orc.
