Batpony

When making official royal visits, Princess Luna traveled in her chariot. It was pulled by two very unusual stallions. Echo and Nocturne belonged to a race of ponies that lived deep in mountain caves like bats. They had gray fur, pointed wings, cat-like eyes, and a very silent personality.

Luna found them when she answered the call to Smoky Mountain many moons ago, and several moons after she settled the dispute between the bat ponies and the mountain dragons. This time, the princess discovered two bat ponies who strayed from the colony and fell into the clutches of an evil dragon who left his tribe only out of deep hatred for the hymenopteran ponies. Luna put him to sleep with the help of alicorn magic so that the stallions could fly away. Deeply grateful for such help, Echo and Nocturne asked for eternal service as royal guards.

"Will we be needed for today's visit to Ponyville, Your Highness?" Echo asked with a bow, squinting at the unaccustomed daylight.

"Not at all,— Luna assured him. Even tired after a long night, she would be glad to see that her experiment worked, "I'm just going to drop in without an invitation," she looked at Nocturne, who couldn't open his eyes at all, "And besides," she grinned, "you two can't make out anything in the sunlight.".

—No problem,— Nocturne grunted. He took out a pair of shiny sunglasses and put them on. Echo did the same, "We're ready for anything, Princess!"
