Bilbo Baggins


Bilbo Baggins is the Hobbit uncle of Frodo Baggins.
According to the author's idea, initially Bilbo is a very respectable hobbit from a respected family. Subsequently, he completely lost his reputation, as he was engaged in completely indecent (for a respectable hobbit) activities, such as traveling, making friends with elves and dwarves, and writing poetry. However, he himself did not regret such a loss, especially since his fortune was significantly replenished with imported gold.

Bilbo first appears in the story "The Hobbit, or There and Back Again," which tells how in 2941, T. E. Gandalf the Grey persuaded him, along with a group of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield, to liberate the Underworld Kingdom in Erebor, captured by the dragon Smaug. During this campaign, Bilbo rescued the dwarves who hired him more than once, saving them from certain death and imprisonment. At the same time, he finds his weapon, the Sting sword, which he later gives to his adopted nephew Frodo Baggins. While crossing the Misty Mountains, Bilbo meets Gollum and finds the Ring of Omnipotence in a cave under the mountains.

In the end, Bilbo's campaign with the dwarves to the east ends in victory, overshadowed by the death of the dwarf leader Thorin and his nephews Fili and Kili. After the liberation of the Mountain, Bilbo returns home to the west with great wealth, buys back most of his property (since he was declared dead in his homeland) and for almost 60 years does not show himself in any way, living quietly and peacefully for his own pleasure. The second time we meet Bilbo is in the pages of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Having lived a longer life than is measured for an ordinary hobbit, Bilbo decides to leave the Shire after his 111th birthday and visit his old friends in Dale. After that, he settles in Rivendell, the domain of Elrond. The ring remains with Frodo, who is destined to destroy it in the future. Bilbo himself leaves Middle-earth at the age of 132 and goes with Frodo, Gandalf and the elves across the sea to Aman.
Bilbo is the author of the first part of the Scarlet Book ("A Journey There and Back").
