The Eldar (Warhammer)

"Do not believe their appearance, for to an honest man, the Eldar are as much strangers as the terrible tyranids or ferocious orcs. They are moody and fickle, attacking without reason or warning. One should not try to understand them, because there is nothing to understand; they are an accidental force in the universe"
– Imperial Commander Abriel Hume

"Compared to them, we are just children. It is sad to admit, but these children will never learn the mistakes of past generations and are doomed to repeat them"
– Inquisitor Cevak

The Eldar, or Aeldari, as they called themselves before the fall of their long—forgotten empire, are an ancient humanoid race that once ruled the galaxy. There were none who could match the power of the Eldar, and they rightly considered themselves masters of the stars. But millennia ago, arrogant pride and ever—increasing destructive aspirations led to a monstrous cataclysm that almost destroyed the Aldari as a species - the birth of the fourth god of Chaos, Slaanesh.

Despite its boundless power, the Eldar civilization was defeated and split into fragments, clinging to life and the future. The Azurians, those who strive to preserve the remnants of their former greatness, travel between the stars on huge spaceship worlds, battling the horrors of the Galaxy with ritualized discipline and honed skills. The Dark Eldar, aka the Drukari— the depraved "heirs" of the last years of the empire—inhabit the Web, using the suffering of other creatures to delay their own demise. The exodites, who have left, live on the edge of the worlds, protecting themselves from the attention of She-who-craves with labor and work that leaves no time for dangerous passions, while the mysterious harlequins continue their eternal game against the forces of Chaos. Although the Aldari are fragmented and few in number, they are still one of the main forces in the Galaxy.

Eldar are similar to humans, they are usually slimmer, taller, with delicate features and pointed ears. The Eldar are long—lived by human standards. A typical Eldar, if he does not die from an accident or illness, lives for about a thousand years. The metabolism of the Eldar is faster than that of humans, and their cardiovascular and nervous systems are more advanced. These differences are manifested in high reaction speed and agility compared to humans. To them, humans move in slow motion and rather clumsily, whereas to humans, Eldar move with amazing grace and can be incredibly fast in battle.

The Eldar race has highly developed psychic abilities, which serves as the basis of their technology. Eldar who actively develop their mental potential further extend their life span in proportion to their strengths. Thus, Eldar seers can live up to ten thousand years or more.

Eldar are mentally superior to humans and feel all emotions much more keenly, which requires constant unloading in order to avoid overexertion and breakdown.

According to a common theory, the reproduction cycle of the Eldar proceeds stepwise, the genetic material is added by the father to the growing embryo over a certain period. This is indicated by autopsies of Eldar bodies, although this process is still poorly understood. Also, unlike humans, Eldar have a quadruple DNA helix, not a double one.

The current Eldar are refugees, scattered remnants of their former strength and greatness, but despite this they still represent one of the main forces in the galaxy. Once upon a time, ten thousand years ago, the Eldar were among the most powerful and numerous races of the galaxy, owned a significant part of it and flourished in their stability. Although the other races also had advanced technology and military power, none of them were a serious threat to the Eldar. The catastrophe came from within. Consumed by arrogance, not obligated to study or work, many of the Eldar began to pursue new pleasures and desires. Soon, cults dedicated to exotic knowledge, physical pleasures, and more and more incredible entertainment appeared. Very quickly, many of the Eldar embarked on a dark path, slipping into unbridled cruelty and an unlimited thirst for pleasure. That's how the Fall began.

Many of the Eldar were concerned about the actions of their kindred, and the wisest seers warned that such a path could only lead to evil. In disgust, many Eldar left the central worlds of their empire to settle in the outlying regions of the galaxy, while others remained in order to try to change the path their race had chosen.

Such sentiments of the masses would be devastating for any society, but for the Eldar it was much more terrible. Psychic echoes of these actions began to gather in the warp, reinforced by the souls of dying cult followers. And as the vices of the Eldar grew and spread, these echoes coalesced into a rapidly evolving collective consciousness that eventually took on the semblance of its own life and realized itself as Slaanesh, the Devourer of Souls. This moment was the death of the Eldar, as the psychic cry of his birth literally tore the souls from the bodies of the Eldar at a distance of many thousands of light years. This awakening was so powerful and swift that it tore a gap between the real world and the Immaterium, dragging the homeworlds of the Eldar into the hellish depths of the warp. This area is now known as the Eye of Terror and is a home and refuge for the forces of Chaos. Many of the Eldar who survived the Fall remained on the Eldar homeworlds captured by the Eye and were enslaved by Slaanesh.

Since then, the Eldar have become a broken and fragmented people with no single purpose and purpose, and their number is gradually decreasing.

The Eldar are known as a highly spiritual people, and much of their culture is based on their mythology. The most famous of their mythological tales is the War in Heaven, an epic conflict between the Eldar deities, divided into two sides, led by Vaul, the god of the forge, and Kael Mensha Khaine, the god of war.

With three exceptions, the Pantheon of Eldar gods is considered destroyed as a result of the birth of Slaanesh. And although the Eldar still honor all the gods and keep their stories in mythical tales, they no longer call for their help and do not rely on their intervention. However, there is a prophecy about the return of the Eldar gods, who, united, will fight Slaanesh and destroy it. Whether this is something more than just a fairy tale is unclear.

Among all the languages used by the various races of the Galaxy, the language of the Eldar is the most complex and ambiguous. In their speech, the Eldar often mention mythical characters, ancient heroes, and times long gone. In communication, they often use various subtle gestures and movements.

Each written symbol of the language is actually not just a letter, like the letters of the Imperial high or low Gothic. This is a whole concept or idea, the meaning of which depends on the context. Due to its flexibility, the language is common to all and is used by both the inhabitants of the shipworlds and the inhabitants of Commorragh, but each faction has its own dialects and dialects.
