...The last 200 years, when an increasing number of Sapiens earn their daily bread by working in factories and offices, and the 10,000 years preceding them, when Sapiens were farmers and shepherds, are a blink in comparison with the tens of thousands of years during which our ancestors hunted and collected plant food.

Evolutionary psychology asserts that many modern psychological and social characteristics of humans were formed during that long period of history before the era of agriculture. Our brains and thoughts still correspond to a life of hunting and gathering. Our eating habits, our conflicts, and our sexuality are all driven by the interaction of the hunter—gatherer brain with the current post-industrial environment, megacities, airplanes, phones, and computers. This environment provides us with such material benefits and a life expectancy that previous generations never dreamed of, but we experience stress, feel alienated, and become depressed. To understand why this happens, we need to try to immerse ourselves in the hunter-gatherer world that shaped us. Into the world in which our subconscious mind is stuck.

Why, for example, are we so fat? Modern rich countries are unsuccessfully fighting obesity. We eat and eat and eat, even when we don't need backup. Worse, we gorge on the saltiest, sweetest, fattest, highest-calorie foods we can get our hands on. This mystery is solved if we recall the eating habits of our ancestors. In the savannah and in the forest where they lived, high-calorie sweets were extremely rare, and in general there was not much food. 30,000 years ago, the collector knew only one type of dessert — ripe fruits. If a Stone Age woman came across a fig tree bending under the weight of a crop, the most sensible thing to do was to eat as many fruits as possible right on the spot before the baboons got to them. The instinct to cram high-calorie food into ourselves is in our genes. Even if we now live in luxury apartments with all the comforts, where the refrigerator is full to capacity, our DNA still thinks that we are running around the savannah. That's what makes us scrape out a bucket of chocolate ice cream to the last spoonful and wash it down with Coca-Cola.
