The Genestealers

Genestealers (Corporaptor hominis) are a bioform of the Tyranid race that was genetically engineered by the Hive Mind to invade the colonized worlds of other intelligent species in the galaxy.

The Tyranids are a wandering xenos species controlled by a collective consciousness known as the Hive Mind. This species includes many different genetically engineered bioforms, one of which is genestealers.

Genestealers are able to use their unique parasitic reproductive cycle and psychic abilities to create so-called "genestealer cults" on imperial worlds. These cults are used to support the attack of the hive fleet by infiltrating human society and undermining its military defenses from within.

Genestealers are the advanced troops of the hive fleets. The first Tyranids were discovered by the Imperium, but their true nature is hidden by many legends.

Every conceivable interpretation of the genestealer's curse has been postulated throughout the field of humanity, but even the strangest story does not reveal even a fraction of the terrible truth about these creatures and the reproductive cycles of the genestealer's curse that they spread.

By spreading their genetic curse in secret, these creatures multiply the threat they pose in the form of a virus. Even a single pure-blooded genestealer, carried through the stars by an unsuspecting pilot who lands on a fertile planet, can produce enough corrupted offspring to take over this world entirely. Such potential disasters are largely spread throughout the Imperium.

The spread of infestations has become even more rampant since the opening of the Great Rift, with countless refugee ships fleeing in desperate flight, providing ideal transportation for the xenos.

Genestealers are also used by the Hive Mind as the main strike force for Tyranid swarms during surface and void battles.

Few Tyranid creatures have earned such a terrible reputation or caused as much damage to the Imperium as the genestealers. Encountered long before the first tentacles of the hives reached the galaxy, they were considered little more than an unusual and deadly xenoform. It was only after the horrors of the Behemoth and Leviathan hive fleets that the Imperium came to realize their true purpose as highly advanced infiltrators of the Hive Mind of the most insidious kind. Hiding on empty ships and in the depths of space rovers, the genestealer menace traveled the length and breadth of the Imperium, settling on human worlds and undermining their populations. This is perhaps the greatest horror that genestealers bring, as they can infect almost any life form with their "kiss", implanting it from their own genetic material into the host (carrier) and completely controlling its reproductive system. When a host gives birth to offspring, they carry the genestealer's genes, and within a few generations, a new genestealer is born, albeit with some genetic traits taken from its host: such as the humanoid arms possessed by many genestealer hybrids found in the Imperium.

The cunning and independent genestealers are one of the few Tyranid bioforms that can exist far from the influence of the hive mind, using their innate intelligence and brood telepathy to form cohesive groups. These groups can survive for decades or even centuries on worlds, hiding their presence and infecting more and more populations until the time comes to strike, usually coinciding with the arrival of the hive fleet and the massive invasion and consumption of the world by the Great Devourer.

For the first time, genestealers were encountered on Imgarl. Despite the fact that attempts to take them alive failed, they were initially considered dangerous, but a separate species of aborigines. After that, similar creatures were found far from Imgarl. Only the discovery of their presence in the Tyranid army proved the theory wrong.

When the Imperium first encountered the genestealers, no one suspected that these "dangerous predators" were some kind of scouts of the Great Devourer. No one could have imagined that a single genestealer who had entered the planet could bring terrible destruction upon it. Now, after many lost worlds and billions of dead citizens, the Imperium is well aware of the genestealer threat.

Genestealers, like almost all tyranids, are characterized by six limbs and an elastic shell. They usually walk on two legs, although they can use medium-clawed limbs for faster movement, which allows them to develop truly tremendous speed. The upper sets of limbs are distinctly different, with the leading pair ending in sharp claws capable of cutting through the dreadnought's tactical armor. Their secondary limbs are typically shaped like curved arms, allowing them to manipulate objects, lift, and even control simple devices such as touchpads. The number of which depends on the mother's body. Despite their agility, these secondary limbs are still more than capable of ripping a limb out of its socket. The thick, muscular tail is apparently rudimentary, although it can help balance and agility displayed by all variations of this species.

The color of a genestealer varies depending on its parent fleet, the hive. Perhaps the most successful type of genestealer is characterized by a blue-indigo coloring. This species has been found on numerous space hulls, and it is possible that it is specifically nomadic; bioengineering is solely for infecting new hosts.

The genestealer's head resembles an onion, which houses a disproportionately large and adaptable brain. Its jaws are lined with viciously sharp teeth, all designed to devour and tear; like other tyranids, they possess only incisors without molars.
Their carapace, along with the density of their internal skeleton, tends to thicken with body weight; a genestealer whose host was an orcoid would typically be tougher than one born from the Eldar gene pool. Underneath it is a fibrous muscular shell, which is comparable in strength to a standard imperial bulletproof vest. These layers provide a significant degree of protection; combined with their naturally tough physique, this makes it possible for the genestealer to run headlong through volleys of lasgun fire and survive. Like other tyranid organisms, they usually have an open circulatory system with hemolymph filling the intercellular spaces. This system is the host of unnumbered phage cells, which are believed by magos biologis of the new Hallefuss Research Center to be digestive systems. They allow them to feed on the nutrient-rich end product of the tyranid invasion. Closer examination reveals the phage cells to have a dual purpose, acting in a manner similar to fibrinogens in the human bloodstream and clotting the fluids that seep out from all the wounds the genestealer has sustained.

Thanks to the capture of living tyranid specimens by the Order of the Draco Legion Adeptus Astartes, it became known that genestealers are able to feel pain and react negatively to its use, either becoming incredibly aggressive or falling into temporary submission. Genestealers have a great tolerance for cold, which allows them to survive in the void of deep space, hidden in the bowels of space hulls, which they usually infect. They are even able to survive in a vacuum for a short period of time. In order to truly exploit the detritus of space, the genestealer has great longevity and also the ability to endure long periods without nutrition. The genestealer can also enter a state of torpor at will, drastically reducing their metabolic rate, allowing them to survive long periods of inactivity and hardship until new prey enters their lair.

Genestealers reproduce by injecting their genetic material into a host from another intelligent species; usually a human, but theoretically there could be any intelligent humanoid race, including Eldar or Orcs. Genestealers do not have true sexes, and a creature of any gender is suitable for reproduction. The genestealer finds the appropriate host and hypnotizes it using its hypnotic gaze. The genestealer then plunges its whip-long tongue (which also serves as an ovipositor) into the host's body, where it deposits its DNA in the form of a virus that infects the host's somatic and germ cells. A few hours later, the infected victim wakes up after the incident without any injuries or any recollection of what happened. The new Genestealer DNA host will continue its normal life and eventually reproduce with another member of its species, thereby creating or giving birth to a genestealer hybrid. The genestealer's reproductive cycle operates cyclically, as hybrid phase 4 will always produce a purebred genestealer with a gene identical to the original genestealer that infected the first host.

Newborn genestealer hybrids, although mostly from the genestealer, will have characteristics inherited from the parent host. Thus, a human genestealer hybrid may have a vaguely humanoid head, or have only two arms instead of the usual four, and a shortened tail or none at all. A genestealer from the fourth or more generations of consistent human ancestry will pass for an ordinary person on a cursory inspection, although a closer look will show bluish skin, sharp teeth, and disturbing behavior. The Imgarl genestealers on their homeworld used a large, semi-intelligent creature called Csith as their regular host. As a notable exception, Csith always produce natural Imgarl genestealers, no matter what the bloodline of previous generations.

Single individuals are extremely rare, usually xenos have a whole brood of several dozen members. Genestealers don't rely solely on their deadly speed and razor-sharp claws to defeat their enemies. They have significant intelligence comparable to Fenrisian Wolves and are able to coordinate stealth tactics such as setting functional traps when hunting prey. It is believed that they transmit information telepathically, since no other form of communication has been observed from them so far. It is believed that this "brood intelligence" is akin to the great one, the consciousness of the hive mind, only on a smaller scale. This allows the genestealer brood to act as an autonomous unit in order to act on their own, being far from the synapse of the larger tyranid creatures.

Most of the Empire's information about the genestealers' combat abilities was provided by the 1st Company of the Blood Angels. They have made numerous expeditions into the depths of space wanderers such as Spawn of Execution, Charybdis, Immeasurable Hatred, Sin of Damnation, and Harbinger of Despair. Awarded the Blood Star after successfully conducting missions in the heart of two of the aforementioned rovers, Sergeant Lorenzo of the Blood Angels has filed comprehensive reports on the tactics used by these aliens and the deadly threat they pose.

A genestealer will not winter without a deep familiarity with its surroundings, including ventilation systems, sewers, and other bypassing methods that permeate the corridors of the space hulk. Thus, they can use this knowledge to take advantage of unsuspecting victims, whose knowledge of the labyrinthine passages of an empty ship is often extremely limited. This allows them to close incredibly quickly, negating any possibility of cutting them out with ranged weapons. Once the genestealer is in close proximity, it uses its incredibly durable claws, capable of cutting through bulkheads and cutting through the thickest armor. Combined with the amazing strength provided by the efficiency of the genestealer's musculature, it is possible that the genestealer will break through one of the sides of the chimera and reach the troops inside. Any returning survivors of a genestealer attack are either heavily armed, forewarned, and well-trained, or become pureblood seed-bearing hosts.

Although the genestealer's distinctive claws are his primary weapon, some changes in the shape of the xenomorph have been reported across the galaxy. Long piercing claws sometimes replace the genestealer's secondary limbs, and several specimens have been found on orco-infected space hulks with thicker shells. In 234.921.M41, the captured genestealer carried virulent, inorganic venom and hemotoxins in organic pouches on his arms. Another well-known genus can shoot thick, spiky strands of tendons at its victims to keep them still. These "flesh hooks" are sent from the chest by acute intercostal muscle spasm, and can also help xenomorphs in climbing and other movements on vertical surfaces. Presumably, these traits are either partially inherited from the host species, or bioengineered by the collective mind in its eternal search for more and more deadly combat organisms.

Subspecies

Pure-blooded

Pure-blooded genestealers have the same basic body structure as all other tyranid species. They look like human-sized, six-limbed creatures with chitinous exoskeletons and endoskeletons common to tyranids. They can move on two limbs using their lower appendages; the second pair has extremely sharp claws used for evisceration in close combat - these claws are sharp enough to easily slice open extremely well-armored enemies such as the Terminator Astartes. A third set of limbs can also act as weapons, although their nature may vary depending on the type of host rocks used to create genestealers or the needs of the collective mind. In addition, genestealers are known for their agility and skillful combat skills.

Imgarl

Imperial researchers of the Adeptus Mechanicus have concluded that the Imgarl genestealer was a form of a species that separated from the main Behemoth hive fleet several hundred years ago and, having completely lost its psychic connection with the Tyranid mind, thus returned to a wild state. The Imgarl genestealers seem to be different from ordinary genestealers, which the Imperials also believe is due to their complete separation from the hive mind, which feeds almost exclusively on the natural life form of the moons of Imgarl.

Genestealers are known to change over many generations. The different variations between broods can be quite noticeable, but the Imgarl are truly unique because they have the ability to change their own flesh to respond to incoming attacks or change their color like a chameleon to blend into their surroundings and remain invisible until they strike or escape. Their clawed fingers can elongate and fuse together to form curved blades and barbed hooks, or split into tentacles of sinewy flesh to slice or entangle victims who try to escape. Under attack, their chitinous shells thicken and help absorb the energy of incoming attacks.

Some Imperial observers who came into contact with these creatures reported the ability of this strain to change the color of their skin, using extreme lighting conditions to better remain unnoticed. Such extreme adaptation comes at a high cost for this bioform, as Imgarls must often feed on large amounts of biomaterial. In addition, the most distinctive feature of the Imgarl is the mass of writhing tentacles instead of a fanged mouth, which they use to bite through the flesh of their prey and feed better on blood - this is the only source of real nutrients for this species. When they cannot get enough nutrition to feed their frenzied metabolism, they will be forced to enter a dormant state or starve to death. In this state, they have to wait for something alive and with fresh blood to pass close enough to disturb their sleep.

The origin of the Imgarl genestealers remains a mystery to Imperial scientists, as they did not appear to be a strain of a bioform created by any of the hive fleets already known to have invaded Imperial space. Maybe they are the last survivors of the Tyranid exploration of the galaxy before the arrival of the Behemoth hive fleet. Even more strangely, while the survival instincts of other genestealer species lead them to flee from the arrival of their hive fleet creator, the Imgarl genestealers actively seek them out, as if hoping to once again hear the comforting presence of the hive mind. Moving from planet to planet, they spread across the galaxy in search of worlds that lie in the path of the approaching hive fleet. Once there, they will remain inactive until the hive mind confirms contact with them, and they can hunt with the rest of the tyranid swarm. However, the hive mind has no desire to reabsorb their biomass or genetic inheritance so that their instability spreads throughout all the biomorphs in the hive fleet. After the target world is destroyed and all its biomass is devoured, the brood of Imgarl genestealers are abandoned, and they are forced to enter hibernation once again. Unfortunately, human starships often explore Dead Worlds left behind after a Tyranid attack. So they came to learn more about the terrifying xenos, amid the forlorn hope of discovering survivors, or how scavengers come to take all the wealth that might be left. These fools and idealists eventually leave with a much more deadly cargo hidden in their holds, ready to spread the cycle of death and terror all over again.

First, the Imgarl genestealers were not considered part of the broader Tyranid race, but instead were considered xenos originally from the moons of Imgarl. However, two hundred standard years later, during the invasion of the Behemoth Hive Fleet in 745.M41, the Tyranids used genestealers as shock troops and melee infantry in countless battles against the Imperium and other intelligent races of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Magos Biologis of Mars has spent many years trying to classify Tyranid artifacts and bioforms left on Macragge after the invasion of the Behemoth Hive fleet by the victims of the Ultramarines. However, they could learn quite a lot about the origin from these remains. But the only notable discovery was that the Tyranids were using genestealers as their shock troops. It was believed that these xenos had spread throughout the galaxy aboard imperial cargo barges and abandoned spaceships. Many of the Imperium's most violent encounters with genestealers before the arrival of the Tyranids had been aboard infected space corps, and the names of such rovers as the Sin of Damnation were forever synonymous with them. The presence of genestealers among Tyranid bioforms proved that these earlier assumptions about genestealer-independent origins were false. Further genetic analysis confirmed that all the genestealers, even the Imgarl variant, were a bioform of tyranids.

In response to this news, the Salamander Order has launched xenocidal campaigns to clear the moons of Imgarl of vile creatures, and inquisitors from the Ordo Xenos have stepped up their search for any signs of new genestealers, but there is little else that can be done to deal with the problem. The question that continues to puzzle imperial scientists is whether the Imgarl genestealer species is the remnants of an unknown ancient hive fleet that entered the galaxy before Behemoth, or whether there is more to the current Tyranid invasion that has not yet become apparent. Regardless of the outcome, the Imgarl genestealer subspecies was not completely destroyed by the Salamanders' efforts. They wait in the darkest corners of the galaxy, always waiting for the right moment to infect new worlds and offer another sacrifice for the Great Devourer. The truth about the Imgarl strain has not yet been revealed.

Adrenaline

Genokrad Adrenal (orig. The Adrenal Genestealer is a new subspecies that has appeared in the Tyranid armies: deadly agile and relentless, these dangerous new enemies appear from every dark corner. Added to these deadly adrenal creatures are the common tyranid biomorph that can be found on most of their frontline warriors. Polyp-like organisms get stuck on a host and release doses of a powerful adrenaline-like substance during combat, making the host's creature relentless and almost unstoppable in the heat of battle.

Vector-deformed

Vector-deformed genestealer (orig. Vectori-Strain Genestealer) is a subspecies of genestealers adopted by the Death Guard in the Strait of Jericho to designate a unique breed of genestealer encountered aboard the space rover Mortis Thule. Much more flexible than the pureblood, of all the bred genestealers, this xenos is well adapted to fast, quiet movement in a confined space, with their reduced body weight reduces energy consumption for their metabolism, which allows them to work efficiently for longer periods without eating. They are agile and stealthy hunters, working with the focus and efficiency that are natural to such creatures, for whom saving energy is an integral part of survival. However, their lighter physiology makes them unsuitable for direct attack tactics, being not as durable as other purebloods.

Lord of the Brood

The Lord of the Brood (orig. The Broodlord, or Corporator Primus, is the end product of genestealer evolution. He is very strong, agile and durable, which makes him an excellent advanced warrior. In addition to their already powerful fighting abilities, the Overlord also has several Tyranid Biomorphs.

The brood Lords act as the commander of the Tyranid landing force, personally leading the attacks. They have the ability of "synapse", often seen in higher tyranid forms, which allow them to coordinate the psychic commands of the hive mind over less weak tyranid species. This is unlike the traditional genestealer cults that breed and grow on infected imperial worlds in order to extract their followers from the local population and mentally dominate them and worship them as gods. The army led by the commander is a reconnaissance vanguard, acting similarly to the Lictor. A brood lord based on telepathic communication can track his enemies and use his immense intelligence to coordinate and command lesser genestealers.

Vector-deformed Brood Lord
The circumstances that lead to the appearance of the Brood Lord are still relatively unknown to the Ordo Xenos, but speculation and theories abound. In the case of those found aboard the space hulk Mortis Thule in the Strait of Jericho, it has been suggested that exposure to Warp energies and isolation from the hive mind somehow culminated in the creation of the "alpha" genestealer, a creature of terrible grandeur and terrible power that exists at the core of collective reproduction shared by some specific group. a group of genestealers. Whatever the truths of their origin, the vector-deformed Broodmasters (orig. Vectori-Strain Broodlord) are the most frightening of these creatures. Psychically connected to the instinctive network of hunters, they lie in wait while their smaller brothers lead unwitting prey into traps and ambushes organized by a creature of perversely cunning and inhuman intelligence. When they choose to act directly, very few warriors can withstand this onslaught.

Vector-deformed genestealers have a constant telepathic connection with each other, which can function clearly and without restrictions (for example, from intermediate objects or other types of shielding) up to one kilometer. This allows them to communicate with each other and transmit information to neighboring genestealers quickly and unnoticeably.

Genestealers may appear on the planet, landed by the hive fleet as a reconnaissance mission. Genestealers have a self-preservation instinct that drives them to flee a planet attacked by a Hive fleet. It is not difficult for them to find and board a ship, the crew of which will not even know about the stowaway on board and will take them to another planet. Genestealers also live in space wanderers. Going into hibernation, they wait until someone disturbs the ship, and then fly off to the planet with an unsuspecting victim.

Genestealers travel through space on space rovers, giant conglomerates of ships fused together by Distortion. Often there are valuables and samples of ancient technology on the wanderers, so there will always be someone willing to profit, whether it's an official expedition or ordinary pirates. Anyway, if there are genestealers on the hulk, it's likely that poorly trained mercenaries/soldiers won't be able to deal with them. But the genestealers don't kill all the victims — they capture some of them and implant their gene code in them. After that, the genestealers strive at all costs to infiltrate the ship moored to the hulk in order to land on the planet and infect as many people as possible. The offspring of infected people have mixed DNA of humans and genestealers (not necessarily humans, there have been cases of infection of Orcs, Eldar, Tau and other races). As they mature, the "children" eat away part of the parent's brain so that he becomes a slave to his offspring. The genestealer who has penetrated the planet is gradually growing, establishing a strong psi connection with the hybrid genestealers, as the offspring of the infected are called. This is how the genestealer cult is born.

A common practice for such cults is to mimic religious organizations that worship a certain paternal figure, which hides the Great Devourer. Most often, for citizens, such sects are presented as another cult of the Emperor. Gradually, the number of infected is growing. Ordinary brothers are similar in appearance to humans. Hybrid genestealers are used as a "sample". Over time, the purity of the genes increases and the cult develops pure genestealers, who are used as elite fighters and carefully hidden from the public eye. The first such genestealer becomes the patriarch, the leader of the cult. Decades may pass from the moment of infection to the full development of the cult. The cult seeks to infect as many people as possible who have access to weapons or armored vehicles, are in the highest echelons of power or have psionic abilities. At a certain point, the cult raises an uprising, using all its resources to sow chaos, and the patriarch summons the Great Devourer with a psychic scream. The Tyranids arrive to find the planet in the grip of anarchy.

The Psi beacon that provides the Empire's ships with navigation in warp space, the Astronomicon, fueled by the power of the Emperor, is similar in structure to the Patriarch's magnified psi call. It was he who lured the Tyranids to our Galaxy, and it is he who their hive fleets are flying towards.

Genestealer hybrids are mutated descendants of infected humans who possess both human and genestealer DNA. They usually have three arms, no hair, thick bony growths, especially on the head, an elongated tongue, fangs instead of teeth, claws instead of fingers, etc. Hybrids are carefully hidden from normal people, they come to the surface only during the revolution, using their superhuman abilities for the benefit of the cult.

Pure genestealers, obtained as a result of long-term crossbreeding of hybrids as close to them as possible, are elite stormtroopers of the cult and are used in the first stages of the uprising to destroy PDF troops and Adept Arbitrators.

As the cult strives to infect as many psionics as possible, a psionicist magician is born in the nth generation, who is practically no different from a human, except for the absence of hair and thickened skull bones. The magician is the patriarch's right-hand man and (to the general public) the leader of the cult. He is able to control the members of the cult and leads the most important operations, including during the uprising.

One of the first pure genestealers who still retained some human traits. Huge and outwardly clumsy. Nevertheless, the fighter is excellent, and also a powerful psionicist. Few people, even Space Marines, can handle him.

Ever since the imperial authorities found out that the genestealers were traveling on space rovers, the terminators of the Space Marine orders were sent to clean them up, as only these most experienced fighters, equipped with the best weapons and armor that the Empire could provide, had a chance to resist the genestealers. Nevertheless, such sweeps are often difficult. The memorable sweep of the space hulk Sin of Damnation by the first company of the Blood Angels, consisting of eighty terminators under the command of Captain Mikhail Rafail and with the support of librarian Kalistaria, is one of them. The Space Marines barely managed to overcome the resistance of the genestealers, but they also recovered a couple of artifacts lost six hundred years before.

The genestealers have created many cults throughout the Imperium, and there are countless of them, so only the most famous ones will be listed here.

Gravalax

The genocult on the planet Gravalax seems to have existed for a relatively long time, so much so that it was able to take root in the local aristocracy and almost start a war between the Imperium and the Tau, fortunately it was destroyed in time by Kaiafas Kain commissar from the 597th Valhallan regiment.

Kefia

The Kefian genocult penetrated deeply into the regiments of the Imperial Guard stationed on the planet and caused almost a civil war, but thanks to the dedication of the emperor's servants, the threat of the xenos was thrown into the abyss.

Virdia

In this case, the influence of xenos on the planet spread only among ordinary residents and PDF, and the high command and administration were not affected. The rebellion was quickly suppressed by two platoons of the Reconquer Order and many regiments of the Imperial Guard.
