Gollum


Gollum , in another translation Gollum), also known as Smeagol (English Smeagol, in some translations Smeagol; he bore this name when he was a Hobbit) is one of the key characters in the works of John R. R. Tolkien "The Hobbit, or There and Back" and "The Lord of the Rings".

One of the distinctive features of Gollum is his manner of speech. He speaks of himself in the plural of the first person and uses modified versions of ordinary words in speech, for example, "hobbits" instead of "hobbits", "birdses" instead of "birds", etc.

Gollum is a small, extremely skinny creature with large glowing eyes. His skin, according to The Hobbit, is shiny and black in color. The Hobbit mentions that he lived on the surface in the past, but it doesn't mention that Gollum was once a halfling.:

Probably, according to the original idea of the author, Gollum was some kind of creature of unknown breed. This is how he is depicted in Bakshi's cartoon — looking both like a spider and a hungry frog. In the film version, Jackson's skin, on the other hand, was shown to be very pale. Gollum is quite strong, but cowardly and deceitful.

In The Lord of the Rings, Gollum's biography and personality are revealed much more fully: in the trilogy, he no longer appears as an incomprehensible monster, but as an unfortunate former hobbit, a victim of the Ring. He begins to suffer from a split personality, talking to himself, dividing into a naive, cowardly Smeagol and an evil Gollum. He is negatively affected by light elven magic: he refuses to eat lembas, and the elven Lorien rope that Sam ties around his neck causes Gollum excruciating pain with a single touch. He hates any light, both sunlight and moonlight. His main food is raw fish or meat, apparently Gollum does not disdain carrion either; it was mentioned in The Hobbit that he killed and ate goblins in caves. However, his favorite food is still fish.
