Harlequins


Harlequins are known in the Eldar lexicon as Rillietan, an organization of Eldar, warrior-comedians, followers of the Great Harlequin (better known as Cegorach, or the Laughing God), who is one of the two Eldar deities who survived the Fall. These mysterious creatures make no distinction between war and art, engaging in them with equal grace and superhuman skill. Sinister, mysterious and fickle Harlequins fight in an endless guerrilla war against the servants of Destructive Forces in the name of their Laughing God.

In addition to destroying enemies, Harlequins have another ritual duty — they travel between the possessions of their disunited brethren, between ship worlds, exodite planets and the dark city of Commorroi, performing dances and acting out scenes from the mythical cycles of the Eldar. These reverent ritual performances remind the Eldar of the gods they once knew and the Fall of their people, giving them at least some semblance of unity. Therefore, it is not surprising that when war calls, when darkness gathers, it is the Harlequins who often form temporary alliances between the Commorrites and their relatives from artificial worlds.

Harlequins always wear unusual colorful clothes and use shimmering holo-suits, which they call datedi. Holo-suits, similar in effect to the holo-shields on Eldar tanks, distort the silhouette of the wearer. With each movement, its outlines are fragmented into a whole cloud of tiny particles, and when it stops, they reassemble into a single whole. Harlequins never show their faces, hiding them under changeable masks capable of displaying anything at the will of the wearer. When the followers of the Laughing God go to war, their masks reflect the worst nightmares of whoever looks at them.
