John is considered to be the bastard of Lord Eddard Stark, the head of the House of Stark, who rule the North. John does not know the truth about his origins. Ned promised to tell him who his mother was someday, but he never got around to it. One day, Eddard told King Robert that the girl Robert thinks is John's mother was Willa; he didn't tell anyone else about her.

Bastards usually lived apart from their father, but John was raised with Eddard's children in Winterfell. Eddard's wife, Catelyn Stark, hated John. She knew it wasn't the boy's fault that his father had cheated on her, but she couldn't help herself. In any case, John was taught along with the rest of the children, he learned horse riding, swordsmanship and literacy. His siblings treated him as an equal, with the exception of Sansa, who tried to look like her mother in everything. John loved his younger sister Arya the most.

During his time in the watch, John quickly earns prestige among the young marines and some of the old ones, and also becomes the Stewart of the Lord Commander.
