Jesse McCree, armed with a revolver called the Peacemaker, stands guard over justice. But he understands her in his own way.

McCree was already known as one of the "liquidators" — a gang that was smuggling weapons and military equipment in the American Southwest - when he was tied up along with accomplices during the Overwatch special operation. The sharp-witted and resourceful McCree was given a choice: spend the rest of his days in a maximum-security prison or join Blackwatch, the secret Overwatch unit. He chose the latter.

McCree was skeptical at first, but over time he believed he could make amends for his past misdeeds by rooting out injustice in the world. McCree liked the flexibility in the choice of funds that Blackwatch participants had, because they didn't have to follow bureaucratic rules and regulations. When the influence of Overwatch began to weaken, some Blackwatch participants decided to take advantage of this and do away with the parent organization in order to play by their own rules. McCree did not want to join the renegades and lay low for a while.

A couple of years later, he turned up as a mercenary. Many people want to use McCree's services, but he agrees to fight only for what he thinks is right.
