Melkor

You were before Arda was born, but so were others; and you didn't create her. There is someone more powerful than you; you have wasted your power on yourself; your own emptiness has swallowed it up.

Melkor, or Morgoth Bauglir (English Morgoth Bauglir) is the main and very first antagonist of the Legendarium of Middle—earth. By nature, he is one of the Ainur, who was considered a Valar before his conversion to evil.

Before wasting his powers, Melkor was the greatest power in Ea. In its creation, he took a great and powerful role, in particular by creating: Imbar Ardy (earth's crust), fire and cold. Due to pride and selfishness, Melkor distorted Eru's plan for the creation of the world to his advantage, but his role was initially consistent with it. Only after that, the desire to rule Arda and rule the Children of Eru drove Melkor crazy, making him the first incarnation of Evil.

For absolute control, he enclosed the particles of his soul in the physical matter of Arda (but this wasted his great powers). He destroyed the Lamps of the Valar and the Trees of the Valar. He forced all awakened people to renounce the Era, thus incurring the Creator's wrath on them. Out of hatred and envy for the elves, the Noldor clan set up lies against the Valar. He stole from them the greatest treasure in the world, the Silmarils, and killed their king, bringing upon himself a centuries-old War. In the process, he created dragons and finally wasted his strength on controlling the servants, falling to a pitiful state. Nevertheless, with the help of his servants, he defeated the elves and men, but was defeated by the Valar army and banished from the world.

Like the other Ainur, Melkor was created by Iluvatar before the creation of Ea (the universe). He was created together with another Ainu, Manwe, who in Iluvatar's mind was the brother of Melkor.

Melkor often wandered alone through the Void in search of an Unquenchable flame. With his help, Melkor was eager to give Existence to his own creations. It seemed to him that the Era didn't care about Emptiness and its idleness. Melkor did not find the Flame, for Iluvatar had it, but solitude gave rise to thoughts different from those of his brethren.

Even before Music, Melkor wanted Ayna Varda (Elbereth) as his wife, but she rejected him and Melkor hated her, fearing her more than anyone else in Ea.

When Iluvatar assembled the Ainur for the Music of the Ainur, Melkor created a dissonance by weaving into the general chorus the thoughts he had come to in the Void. Out of pride and selfishness, he wanted not to interpret Eru's Plan, but to change it, magnifying his power and glory in it. Many who sang next to Melkor drooped, their minds became confused, and their melodies faded away, and some began to echo Melkor and changed their thoughts in his favor. Melkor's discord spread and grew, but Iluvatar changed the subject, and Melkor's song became more violent, silencing many of the Ainur.

Iluvatar changed the subject again, but Melkor's song sounded loud and defiant, repeating itself endlessly; there was no harmony in it, but rather a loud unison, like the sound of many trumpets blowing two or three notes. And this music drowned out the theme of Iluvatar, intertwining with it.

Finally, Iluvatar stopped the Music and said:

"Mighty are the Ainur, and Melkor is the mightiest of them, but that he and all the Ainur may know that I am Iluvatar, what you sang about, I will show you as it is, so that you may see what you have done. And you, Melkor, will see that it is impossible to play a theme that does not originate in me, and no one has the power to change the music in spite of me. For whoever tries to do this will turn out to be my own tool in creating entities even more amazing than he himself could have imagined."

Melkor was ashamed, and shame gave rise to secret anger, and Iluvatar went into the Void and turned the song into a visible form. There, the Ainur saw the Arda World they had created. The Ainur also saw the History of the World, so they could know the future, but Eru did not show it all, wanting to correct the evil (dissonance) of Melkor and carry out the plan to the smallest detail. Iluvatar told Melkor that in the World he would find all his secret thoughts and make sure that they were only part of the whole - the Plan of Eru.
