Mortarion is one of the twenty primarchs created by the Emperor of Mankind, whom he created at the dawn of the Imperium, just after the end of the Age of Strife. The capsule with the primarch landed on the remote deathworld of Barbarus, where clans of man-eating monsters ruled, regularly reaping the harvest from the local human population. In this dark world of death and horror, the primarch was adopted by a powerful monster who raised him as his own son and heir. Having learned the terrible truth, the primarch went against the "father", becoming a liberator for the oppressed people, a gloomy messiah. During the Horus Heresy, Mortarion turned to Chaos.
