Deathwing the Destroyer, formerly Neltharion the Guardian of the Earth, is one of the five Dragon Aspects and ruler of the Black Dragon pack. Thousands of years ago, Neltharion received powers from the Titans to preserve the lands and mountains of Azeroth. However, driven mad by the influence of the Ancient Gods, he betrayed the other Aspects during the War of the Ancients. Now both mortals and dragons pronounce his name with fear and contempt.

The Black Aspect entered the Second War, assuming the form of Lord Daval Prestor to destroy the Alliance forces from within. He also managed to turn Alexstrasza, his worst enemy, into a slave of the Horde, who became his ally in the future. After losing several battles to other aspects, Deathwing took refuge in the Underdark, the territory of the earth elementals in the Abode of the Elements, where he healed his wounds for a long time. From there, he observed the experiments of his ex-wife Sintaria on a brood of dragons and then continued her work in Grim Batol.

Although Deathwing was thought to be dead for many years, his return after defeating the Lich King was triumphant and impressive. His anger caused a Rift that changed the lands of Azeroth and caused widespread destruction. He also personally appeared in many places and burned them down. Deathwing's goal was to bring about the Time of Twilight, the end of all life in Azeroth. To do this, he enlisted the help of new allies who also serve the Ancient Gods, including the ogre mage Cho'gall and his cult of the Twilight Hammer, the powerful elemental rulers Ragnaros and Al'akir, and the Tol'vir Neferset of Uldum.
