SMOKING



Another custom of the ancient Hobbits deserves to be mentioned. An amazing custom, I must say: through clay or wooden pipes, they inhaled the smoke of smoldering leaves of an herb, which they called pipe potion or leaf. An aura of wonder surrounds the origin of this strange custom or art, as Hobbits prefer to call it. All that could be learned about him was gathered by Meriadoc Brandyzike (later master of Buckland), and since this custom and tobacco from the South Shire play a role in the subsequent account, Meriadoc Brandyzike's remarks in the preface to his "Tales of the Herbs of the Shire" should be quoted.

"This is the only art that we can definitely claim to be our invention," he says. — It is not known when Hobbits first started smoking it; but in all the legends and the main traditions about smoking it is mentioned as an already existing custom: for centuries, the people of the Shire smoked various herbs, sometimes fragrant, sometimes with various unpleasant odors. But all the legends agree that Tobold the Tobacconist from Longtail (also called Longbottom) in the southern Shire first began growing pipe potion in his garden in the days of Isengrim the Second, around 1070 according to the Shire calendar. The best tobacco varieties are still grown in the area, especially such as Longtail Leaf, Old Toby and Southern Star.

There is no information in the records about how old Toby grew this plant: he did not tell anyone about it. He knew a lot about herbs, but he wasn't a traveler. It is said that in his youth he often visited Prigorye, although there is no doubt that he did not leave the Shire further than this village. It is likely that he learned about this plant in the Hills, where it still grows abundantly on the southern slopes of the hills. Hobbits from the Hills claim that they were the first smokers of pipe potion. They say the same thing, however, about all the other occupations of the inhabitants of the Shire, and the Hobbits themselves who inhabit the Shire are called "colonists". However, I think their statement about the potion is correct. And it is quite natural that it was from the Hills in the following centuries that smoking spread among the dwarves, horsemen, and magicians who still walk back and forth along the ancient road. Thus, the old Prancing Pony Hotel in Prigorye, which has been maintained by the Narkiss family since time immemorial, can be considered the center of the spread of ancient art.

My own observations during numerous travels have convinced me that this plant is not native to our part of the world, but that it came from the south, from the lower reaches of the Anduin: I believe that it was brought there from across the sea by people from the western part of the country. It grows abundantly in Gondor, but it is richer and larger here than in the north, where it is never found wild and where it blooms only in protected areas such as Longtail. The people of Gondor call it scented geilenas and value it solely for the fragrance of its flowers. From here, he could have been brought to us in the long centuries between Elendil's arrival and our days. But even the Dunedans of Gondor admit that the Hobbits were the first to put it in tubes. Even magicians hadn't done this before them.
