The Iron Throne

The Iron Throne is the throne of the kings of Westeros and a symbol of sovereignty over the Seven Kingdoms. This throne, which stands in the throne room of the Red Castle in King's Landing, was forged by order of Aegon the Conqueror from the swords of defeated enemies. This is a very high, uncomfortable and dangerous seat with spikes and blades sticking out — kings have injured themselves on the blades of the throne, and at least one king, Maegor Targaryen, died right on the throne. The King sits on the throne during formal receptions and court sessions. Only the king himself has the right to ascend to the throne and sit on it, and in his absence, the right hand, the substitute monarch.
