Visenya Targaryen

Queen Visenya Targaryen is the older sister-wife of Aegon Targaryen, the first king of Westeros, and Rhaenys Targaryen, the mother of Maegor the Cruel. Visenya's dragon was Vhagar.

Visenya had a classic Valyrian appearance: long silver-gold hair, which she often braided or tied into rings, and purple eyes. She was a beautiful woman, but her beauty was stern and severe. The Conqueror's older sister was harsh and sensual, more passionate and voluptuous than the younger, but at the same time dark and implacable. Unlike the coquette Reinice, she was a seductress.

Even those who loved her more than life agreed that Visenya was tough, serious, and ruthless.

She was a warrior, and she was as comfortable in chain mail as she was in silk. Visenya carried a one-and-a-half-handed Valyrian steel sword called the Dark Sister, forged specifically for a woman's hand, and wielded it skillfully, not inferior to Aegon, who was considered a great warrior, with whom she had practiced swordsmanship since childhood. There were rumors that she played with poisons and practiced black magic.

Queen Visenya, not sharing her sister's love of music, loved to laugh and kept her own buffoon, a hairy hunchback nicknamed Monkey Lord. When he died, choking on a peach pit, she got a real monkey and trained it herself, dressing it in the outfit of the deceased fool.

Biography

Visenya was older than Aegon and Rhaenys, by a year and two, respectively. Visenya, like her siblings, managed to become a dragonrider before she married her brother. She rode Vhagar, the smallest of the dragons involved in the Conquest, but possessed a hot flame that melted knight's armor and fried the man inside them.

There is reliable evidence that Visenya and Aegon visited the Citadel in Oldtown in their youth, and also participated in falconry on Arbor as guests of Lord Redwyne.

The Conquest of Westeros

After the Targaryens established Aegonfort near their landing site on the mainland, Visenya set off to conquer one of the nearby castles, Stockworth. Several crossbowmen tried to defend themselves, shooting at the horsewoman, until the flames of the Vhagar scorched the roof of the castle, after which the Stockworths surrendered. Rosby Castle surrendered without a fight.

When the Targaryens crossed the Twilight Valley, Visenya Targaryen did not allow her warriors to plunder the trading city, but nevertheless appropriated its riches herself, significantly replenishing the conquerors' coffers.

During Aegon's first coronation, within the walls of Aegonfort, it was Visenya who placed a crown on his head[N 2]. A few days later, the Targaryens split up, and Visenya rode Vhagar north towards the Valley, escorting the Targaryen fleet led by Daemon Velarion. In the subsequent battle, Visenya burned the dragon-riding fleet of the Valley, but the conquest of the kingdom was suspended.

After her brother conquered the Riverlands, Visenya went to the Broken Claw. The local lords, who had heard about the end of Harren, laid down their swords in front of her. The Queen accepted fervent oaths of loyalty from them and said that from now on they were her people and should not obey anyone else.

Visenya then met up with Aegon and Rhaenys at the Stone Sept to fight together against the oncoming combined army of the Reach and the Western Lands. In the battle that took place, Visenya and Rhaenys ignited the dry grass on the battlefield, trapping the enemy between two walls of fire. The queen was wounded in the shoulder by an arrow, but soon recovered.

After the victory on the Field of Flame and the subsequent subjugation of the North, the Targaryens decided to split up again, and Visenya went back to the Valley. She flew over the army at the Blood Gate and the castle garrison, landing on a dragon in the courtyard of the Eyrie. When Queen Sharra Arryn ran out to meet them, accompanied by guards, Visenya already had her son Ronnel sitting on her lap. The boy asked his mother for permission to fly with the lady. Sharra and Visenya smiled at each other and exchanged pleasantries, after which the Queen Regent handed over supreme authority over the Valley to the Targaryens, and Visenya circled the Eagle's Nest three times with Ronnel.

Visenya on Vhagar helped Torrhen Stark put down the Sisterhood Rebellion and depose Marla Sunderland, the self-proclaimed queen of the Three Sisters.

Later life

During the First Dornish War, Visenya and Aegon rode dragons to attack castles and palaces in Dorne, avenging the murder of their younger sister. During these troubled times, she wore chain mail day and night, even under her court dresses, advising Aegon to do the same. Aegon has been assassinated at least three times. Two of her guards fell during the attack on Queen Visenya, but she herself defeated the last of the villains with the Dark Sister.

In the year 10, Aegon and Visenya were attacked on the streets of the city by mercenaries hired by the Dornishmen, and the queen saved them both, after which she convinced Aegon of the incompetence of his guards. It is recorded that when Aegon pointed at his guards, Visenya exposed the Dark Sister and cut his cheek before the guards could counteract her. "Your guards are slow and lazy," Visenya is said to have said, and the king had to agree.

This is how Visenya conceived the Royal Guard, for which she made oaths and vows. Visenya believed that a royal defender should not only be proficient in weapons, but also have unwavering loyalty to the king. Aegon entrusted Visenya with the selection of the first members of the order, and all of them served the king faithfully in the future.

In the year 11, Visenya bore Aegon's child. She declared that the child would be a strong boy long before he was born. The newborn Maegor was indeed a big and healthy baby. At the age of three, Visenya handed her son a sword and chose Ser Gaven Corbray, the most formidable knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as his mentor in the art of war.

Most of the time, Visenya lived on Dragonstone with her son, while Aegon ruled from Aegonfort and traveled the country.

In the year 22, Einis Targaryen married Alyssa Velarion. The whole country rejoiced, with the possible exception of Queen Visenya, because her son was now moving even further away from the Iron Throne. Visenya offered to betroth Reyna, Einis' daughter, to Maegor, who had just turned twelve, but Einis and Alyssa did not agree to this.

In the year 25, on his son's thirteenth birthday, Visenya gives his son Maegor his sword Dark Sister, and six months later he marries Serisa Hightower.

In 35, Visenya went to oversee the construction of the Red Castle on Aegon's orders, because, according to Gildain, he could no longer tolerate her presence.

In 37, the High Septon in the Starry Sept anointed Einis with oil and crowned him with a golden crown. However, at the very time when the king was receiving the blessing of the Guardian of the Faith, many already doubted whether he was worthy to sit on the Iron Throne. The party of opponents of the new king was led by Maegor's mother, the Dowager Queen Visenya.

In 39, Visenya conducted the marriage ceremony of her son Maegor according to Valyrian custom, because no septon agreed to hold the ceremony, after which Maegor was exiled to Essos for polygamy. When Einis declared his son Prince of Dragonstone at the wedding of Aegon and Reyna in 41, despite the fact that Maegor held this title, Visenya proudly left the Red Castle and went to Dragonstone. The chronicle says that when the dragon flew by, the moon turned red like blood.

Soon the rebellion of the Holy Army broke out, and Einis himself fled to the island, fleeing from the rebels. The Dowager Queen demanded that her nephew unleash dragons on the Warrior's Sons in King's Landing and the Starry Sept in Oldtown, or allow her to attack these places from Vhagar herself. Einis did not listen to his aunt and ordered her to live in the tower of the Sea Dragon, never leaving there.

Soon the king fell ill, and Visenya took care of him, briefly improving his health, but Einis could not survive the shock caused by the news of the siege of his children.

The Reign of Maegor

As soon as Einis was buried, Visenya rode Vhagar and flew east to Pentos, returning Maegor from exile and declaring him king of Westeros. After the Trial of the Seven, Visenia took off Maegor's helmet and declared that the king was alive and breathing. After that, she ordered her son to be taken to the maesters, and almost a month later she entrusted Tianna to take care of him.

A visit to Driftmark by the Dowager Queen on Vhagar convinced Einis's widow to leave her hiding place and return to court. Alyssa, along with all her brothers and other relatives from House Velarion, took the oath of allegiance to Maegor as the rightful king.

During the confrontation with the High Septon, the King's mother rode Vhagar and carried fire and blood into the Open, as she had once carried it to Dorne. In one night, the ancestral nests of the Blaintree, Terrick, Deddings, Leechester and Wayne houses were put on fire. It is believed that Visenya was involved in the unexpected death of the High Septon.

After the battle of God's Eye, Queen Visenya convinced her son to spare some of the rebellious lords, but even those who survived lost their lands and titles and were forced to give hostages. It is known that by the age of 44, the dowager Queen Hanging on the Dragonstone had become emaciated and withered, as if the flesh had melted from her bones. She died in the same year, and her death was a great blow to the king, from which he never recovered. The king ordered to burn the body of the deceased and bury the ashes next to her brother and husband. The Dark Sister sword, which hung in Visenya's chambers after Aegon the Conqueror's death, was stolen and taken away by Alyssa Velarion.

Visenya was the eldest child of Valaina Velarion and Aerion Targaryen. It is known that the sisters shared their husband, but there was competition between them for his attention. However, Aegon himself preferred the younger one and spent ten nights with Rhaenys for every night with Visenya.

Three islands found by Elissa Farman during her voyage were named after Visenya, Rhaenys and Aegon.
